World War II officailly began on 3 September 1939 when Britain's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared war on Germany for invading Poland. On the same day, Australia's Prime Minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced that Australia was also at war.
Unlike in 1914, there was less enthusiasm from Australian citzens as most people were still sufferinig from the the first war and this time they knew of the gruesome reality of war. However, Australians soon found themselves rallying for a new cause and young men and the unemployed joined the military when promised adventure. Women also played a more important role in WWII than the first war and many joined the war effort to support the troops abroad.
During World War Two, for the first time, Australia found itself under direct military attack. These attacks included the midget submarine attacks on Sydney Harbour and the Bombing of Darwin. World War Two was the deadliest conflict in world history involving almost 1 million Australians.
